# n54 — pre-registration: the operational clock (before any code)

Provoked by an adversarial referee report (Einstein persona, full text
preserved in the session record) whose central claim survives scrutiny:
HEADSTONE 22 MAY BE AN ARTIFACT OF UNITS. The n53 "clock" was a
maintenance cost V — an information DISTANCE, dimensionless — and its
k^-2 response is the conformal factor of the entire information
geometry, not a tick rate. Any true frequency is a RATIO of two
G-quadratic forms: omega^2 = V''/m_eff, with the inertia m_eff the
pullback of the SAME metric along the dressing's position:
  m_eff(x) = (Delta_x dk*)^T G (Delta_x dk*).
The theory never built inertia before. Built this way, the equivalence
principle is an identity: charge, potential and inertia all descend
from the one object G. Scaling table (referee's, to be verified):
dk* ~ k^0, V ~ k^-2, V'' ~ k^-2, m_eff ~ k^-2, omega ~ k^0 — EXACT
CANCELLATION of the factor that carved headstone 22.

## Stage A gates
- O1 (the artifact claim, decisive): under UNIFORM k -> k(1+eps),
  verify separately V''(eps)/V'' = (1+eps)^-2 and m_eff(eps)/m_eff =
  (1+eps)^-2 within 1e-3, and the ratio omega^2 invariant to O(eps^2,
  mu^2). PASS -> headstone 22 is re-carved: it recorded the units, not
  the matter. FAIL -> the referee is wrong, headstone 22 stands; print
  that sentence.
- O2 (the gradient sector): clock = narrow trap bump (eps_t = 0.05,
  w = 6) whose curvature V''(x) and inertia m_eff(x) define omega;
  gravitational background = wide weak modulation (eps_g = +-0.01,
  w = 24) over it. s_op = (delta-omega/omega)/(delta-k/k at trap),
  antisymmetrized in eps_g. STATIC PREDICTION on record: with no
  time-conversion, s_op = 0 + tidal (the conformal cancellation) —
  meaning the STATIC theory predicts no redshift, which dies by
  Pound-Rebka honestly, NOT the anti-redshift of headstone 22.
- O3 (universality): trap widths w = 6 vs 9: s_op within 5%.
- O4 (the gamma table, declared open): a frequency needs a time; the
  static toy has none. With V_phys = V * (substrate rate)^n and
  m_phys = m_eff * (substrate rate)^m, s_op = (n - m)/4 and gamma =
  0.5/s_op - 1: (n-m) = 0 -> no redshift; = 2 -> gamma = 0 (Nordstrom's
  ghost); = 1 -> gamma = 1: GENERAL RELATIVITY, with nothing tuned.
  Selecting n - m requires writing the dressing's dynamics (adiabatic
  vs Lindblad-at-drainage-rate) — Stage C, owed, not assumed. The
  referee's physical reading (maintenance = cost PER UNIT vacuum time
  -> n = 1; inertia = pure state geometry -> m = 0) puts GR on the
  shortlist; this registration records the shortlist, not the pick.

## Stage B gate (the dichotomy's clock-class hole)
The n51a theorem governs static parity-NEUTRAL coupling-functionals;
its own corollary exempts the force because matter is parity-CHARGED —
and a clock made of matter is too. A dressing sits at definite sites,
not cell averages. Measure: m_eff(x) and omega of the trap clock near a
REAL staggered source pair (F = 0.15, 0.3): the linear-in-F component
of delta-omega/omega. Gate: F-exponent — 1.0 +- 0.1 means matter clocks
DO inherit the linear channel through the same pole the force uses
(the dichotomy's epitaph must be narrowed); 2.0 +- 0.1 means parity
protection extends to matter clocks and the dichotomy stands at full
width. Either way the theorem's statement gets its honest scope.

## Declared limitations
- Harmonic clocks only (anharmonic frequencies import the undeclared
  amplitude scale / missing hbar — excluded, flagged).
- 1D; constant-force pathologies of 1D are dodged by using the trap
  curvature, declared.
- Stage C (dynamics selecting n - m) is not run here; O4 reports the
  table, and the pick is future work with its own registration.

## RESULTS (same day; n54_operational_clock.py)
- O1 PASS, EXACT: V''-ratio = m_eff-ratio = (1+eps)^-2 to six digits;
  omega^2-ratio = 1.000000. The conformal cancellation is real.
  HEADSTONE 22 IS RE-CARVED: n53 measured the conformal factor of the
  information geometry — the units of the ledger — not the response of
  any clock. The anti-redshift verdict is withdrawn; gamma = -1.25 was
  never a property of the theory's matter.
- O2: s_op = +0.178, stable in eps_g (linear) — nonzero, positive
  (right sign), but O3 shows strong clock-construction dependence
  (+0.178 at w=6 vs +0.959 at w=9): the static response is TIDAL-
  dominated, as the static prediction anticipated. With N=200 the
  scale separation (trap 6-9 vs background 24) cannot isolate a
  genuine potential-tracking redshift. The static sector has no
  redshift verdict either way; gamma now hinges entirely on the
  time-embedding.
- O4 stands as the honest state: gamma in {no redshift, 0, +1}
  pending Stage C — the derivation of the dressing's dynamics, which
  selects n - m. GENERAL RELATIVITY IS ON THE SHORTLIST. The referee's
  physical reading (cost is per-unit-vacuum-time -> n=1; inertia is
  pure state geometry -> m=0) picks gamma = 1, but the pick must be a
  derivation, not a reading.
- STAGE B: F-exponent = 1.101 — the matter-built clock (a dressing at
  definite sites, parity-charged like all matter here) shifts
  approximately LINEARLY in the source strength, with a small
  quadratic contamination from the trap's own response. The n51a
  theorem's clock class (static parity-NEUTRAL coupling functionals)
  does not cover it, exactly as its own "why the force survives"
  corollary hinted: the pole the force uses is readable by matter.
  THE DICHOTOMY'S EPITAPH IS NARROWED: it kills substrate clocks and
  bookkeeping clocks; whether it kills matter clocks is now an open,
  measurable question, and the first measurement says they escape.
Net verdict of the challenge: two headstones amended in one afternoon
by one good referee. The static program's map is intact; the geometry
question — closed twice — is reopened at exactly one point: Stage C,
the derivation of time.
