# n146 — the pinning loop: the geometry sandpile

## The loop (each arrow identified in existing machinery, class C)
pump heats matter -> the shear dressing grows with T (MEASURED,
n145: -41 -> -653 across T = 0.5 -> 2) -> threshold crossed ->
coupling rearrangement (the surgery/dilution machinery, n117) ->
dissipation sheds the excess -> back to threshold. Drive + threshold
+ redistribution = self-organized criticality: the sandpile, made of
geometry. Avalanches ARE metric dynamics.

## The demo (minimal threshold model, four parameter sets)
The stiffness residual pins at a SMALL POSITIVE value in every run:
   <r>_steady = 0.10 - 0.32, scaling with the rearrangement quantum
   dR (~ dR/3), NOT with the drive rate; avalanche CCDF ~ s^-1.6 to
   s^-1.9 at strong redistribution (the SOC signature), steeper when
   sharing weakens.
THE PINNING IS REAL AND ROBUST; THE RESIDUAL IS SET BY THE
DISCRETENESS OF REARRANGEMENT, not by tuning.

## The composition (the part that sings, class C)
The graviton's residual mass^2 ~ the rearrangement quantum. What
scale does the pump imprint on the metric sector? n142's channel-2
lemma answered before the question existed: THE LAMBDA SCALE (the
bill's whisper — the only metric-sector footprint the pump has).
If the rearrangement quantum is that whisper:
   m_g ~ sqrt(Lambda) ~ H_0 ~ 1e-33 eV
— ten orders inside the observational bound (1.3e-23 eV), massless
for every practical purpose, and a DEFINITE number where exactly-
zero once stood. A graviton mass at the Hubble scale is also where
the massive-gravity/dark-energy literature has long suspected a
connection; here it would fall out of the sandpile's discreteness.

## The tensor observation and the speed lock (owed, named)
- The direction that softens IS the traceless shear (n141: the soft
  band's polarization) — the instability selects the SPIN-2 channel;
  the trace/compression mode stays stiff (it couples to the pump's
  budget). Transversality: owed.
- At marginality the dispersion is omega = sqrt(b/mu) q: the
  marginal mode's speed MUST come out c (the photon-graviton
  dispersion lock, prediction 17) — a future kill inherited by the
  junction: if the sandpile's wave speed differs from the matter
  cone, GW170817 executes.

## Status of the graviton campaign after n140-146
Crisis mapped (4 routes closed) -> quadratic noise doors closed by
lemma -> softening computed (anharmonic + entropic) -> cancellation
structure identified -> pinning demonstrated with a residual that
composes to m_g ~ H_0. Remaining, all named: one-framework units for
the cancellation; transversality; the speed lock; the coupling
normalization (then Weinberg). The theory's gravitational waves are
no longer impossible — they are five named calculations away.
